How to Install a Stained Glass Window
Materials Needed
- Stained glass window
- Glass cleaner
- Glass cutter
- Lead came
- Lead nippers
- Soldering iron
- Flux
- Solder
- Putty
- Glazing points
- Hammer
- Paintbrush
- Window putty knife
- Window glazing compound
Step 1: Measure and Prepare
Measure the window opening to ensure the stained glass window will fit properly. Clean the window frame and remove any old putty or glazing compound.
Step 2: Cut the Glass
Use a glass cutter to carefully cut the stained glass pieces according to your design. Take your time and make precise cuts.
Step 3: Assemble the Glass Pieces
Fit the glass pieces together using lead came. Cut the came to the appropriate lengths and attach the pieces using lead nippers.
Step 4: Solder the Joints
Apply flux to the lead came joints and use a soldering iron to melt solder onto the joints. Be careful not to overheat the glass.
Step 5: Apply Putty and Secure the Glass
Apply putty to the window frame using a putty knife. Press the stained glass window into the putty and secure it with glazing points.
Step 6: Finish the Installation
Smooth out the putty using a paintbrush or putty knife. Allow the putty to dry and then apply a layer of window glazing compound for added stability.
